Home Depot had a slogan you’d hear during their commercials: More saving, More doing. I’m not sure if they still use the same slogan today but it made me think about my personal slogan or what my slogan should be.
Today, I began reading Jason Fried & David Heinemeier Hansson’s book, ReWork, which is another one of those books that I’ve heard about for years but I’m only now reading it. One of the first few chapters is titled, “Planning is guessing.” I haven’t completed the chapter so I’m not going to act like I know what it’s saying. If I had to guess I imagine that it’s similar to one of my theories about how planning can end up turning into a crutch, or an excuse. I’m addicted to planning. I think my addiction stems from the fact that planning is easy, at least it’s easier than actually doing the work. Some days, I spend my time planning instead of getting the work done that I need to accomplish.
That’s why I think my new slogan is: Less planning, More doing. I’m going to spend more time acting on the things I’m talking about doing and less time planning them out.
I’m done procrastinating.
