There are the only four things you need to do well to be successful in your career: Read, Write, Speak, and Math.
About five months ago, I wrote a blog post, Teach Five Things, where I talked about the five things I think kids should learn in school. They were Reading, Writing, Math, History, Art, Music, and Science. These things can be broken down further for people looking for or already in their careers.
If you excel at reading, writing, and speaking then you can do almost anything. You’ll never be without a job. The only thing I would add to these three is Math. If you can understand and solve high-level math like multivariate calculus and linear algebra then you can pretty much do anything in life. These are the four traits every organization wants to have in an employee. If you can do these four things really well then you’ll never find yourself without an opportunity.
I spent most of last year working on these four areas and I will continue to work on them each day in 2016.
GOAL: I want to do something every day to improve in each one of these areas by
- Reading a book every week
- Writing a daily blog post.
- Presenting a speech every week.
- Figuring out a way to incorporate or practice some higher-level math.
In 2016, I want to get really good at these four areas. If I do, then I don’t think I’ll have any problems finding opportunities in the future.
