One of Amanda Palmer’s main rules is, “don’t be afraid to ask.”
She also talks about DIY and how doing it yourself with the help of other people is more fun then doing it alone. In the, Art of Asking, Amanda talked about, “Max DIY” and how it relies on trust and ingenuity. You see this idea of Max DIY in a number of successful startups like AirBnB, Kickstarter, and Uber.
Amanda did everything for her band using this philosophy to create a website, a community around their music, a music video, and their first CD. She learned to ask for help and worked with other people to help her learn to do it herself.
I’m trying to get better at asking for help. It’s not easy for someone like me, who’s tried, and took pride, doing things on my own. This past year, I’ve been trying to break down these barriers by getting out of my comfort zone. It’s why I’ve been trying to write, speak, and network everyday. I need to move past them if I want to move forward. If I don’t break these preconceived ideas of what topics I should or shouldn’t ask for help then I’m not going to be able to get where I want to go professionally.
