Decoration Day

On Friday, I was the Toastmaster at my company’s weekly Toastmasters meeting. The theme of the week was, Decoration Day, which was the original name for Memorial Day.  This day was created after the American Civil War to honor those who died.  It was originally called Decoration Day because people would decorate the grave sites of those who died in the Civil War with either flowers or flags.  Annual Decoration Day typically took place on a Sunday in late spring or early summer.  By the 20th century, Memorial Day eventually became the national holiday to honor all American who died while in the military.

The Difference Between Memorial Day and Veterans Day

Memorial Day and Veterans day both honor the American Military but the difference between n the holidays is that Memorial Day honors those who have died in military service and Veterans day honors all veterans of the military.

Fun Non-Fact:

Nobody knows where the first Memorial Day originally started.  Many small towns believe they are the birthplace of Memorial Day.  In May 26, 1966, President Johnson signed a presidential proclamation naming Waterloo, NY, the birthplace of Memorial Day.  Though a study investigated Waterloo’s claims along with a number of other claims by other towns and found them all to be legends.
